The Institute of Hydraulics and River Dynamics is the main body of teaching and scientific research in this field. In 1981, itbecame the first batch of disciplines with the authority to confer doctorate and master degrees in China. In 1994, it was approved by the People's Government of Jiangsu province to become the first group of key disciplines. In 1996, it became the national key discipline of “211 Project” under the Ministry of Education. In 1999, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the Yangtze Scholars Program specially appointed professors posts. It was approved as a national key discipline in 2007.

The institute attaches great importance to strengthening the condensation of the research direction of traditional disciplines, as well as the integration of the hydrodynamics, basic theory of river dynamics, environment and ecology.

It has its own advantages in water ecology, environmental dynamics, theory and application of engineering hydrodynamics, sediment transport theory, river engineering, hydropower station (pumping station) hydraulics, numerical simulation and water information technology, and so on. In recent years, it has won one item of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, three items of “973” Program and “863” Program and eight items of National Natural Science Foundation of China. In the meantime, it has participated in nine projects of international cooperative scientific research projects, about 100 projects of science and technology plans and key projects at provincial and ministerial level, with an investment of 45.33 million yuan, of which more than 23.0 million yuan is for vertical programs at the national and provincial levels.

It also won eight provincial-level scientific and technological progress awards, published nearly 300 papers in core journals, including 48 SCI and 30 EI. Five doctoral and master's theses were awarded as excellence in Jiangsu Province.

Currently, the institute has 29 members, most of whom have worked and studied abroad and have three undergraduate majors (water conservancy and hydropower engineering, environmental engineering, hydrology and water resources) that support the discipline. Among them, there are 12 professors, seven doctoral supervisors, nine associate professors, two senior experimenters, including one special professor of Yangtze River Scholars, one outstanding talent of the Ministry of Education in the new century, and two outstanding young teachers of Jiangsu Province.
